Ohio has a separate statute for “dangerous and vicious dogs.” These animals are regulated under Ohio Revised Code Section 955.22. If one of them has bitten you, it may also be a crime.
Pit bulls, as a breed, were once defined as "dangerous and vicious" under Ohio law. However, effective May 22, 2012, the pit bull breed has been removed from the definition of "vicious dog" pursuant to House Bill 14. The new law defines a vicious dog as any dog that kills or seriously injures someone without regard to the dog's breed.

The law requires all dogs labeled and defined as dangerous and vicious to be penned in or securely tied.
The owner of a dangerous and vicious dog must maintain a liability insurance policy providing coverage of not less than $100,000 for injuries and damages that may be caused by the dog.
